Francois Truffaut – Double Feature at the Castro
Thursday December 15th
Castro Theater
François Truffaut‘s dark and suspenseful follow-up to Jules and Jim stars Jean Desailly as a married literary critic who meets beautiful airline hostess Françoise Dorleac and begins an affair. As his behavior becomes increasingly impulsive, his infidelity sparks a devastating act of jealousy and revenge. One of Truffaut’s most penetrating works – a haunting score by Georges Delerue enhances the mood in this mixture of Hitchcockian suspense motifs and acutely observed drama. Janus Films is proud to present this long-underrated film in a new 35mm print.

SHOOT THE PIANO PLAYER
5:15, 9:15
Part thriller, part comedy, part tragedy – Charles Aznavour plays a mild-mannered, former concert pianist reduced to playing honky-tonk rags in a side street bar who stumbles into the criminal underworld via his wayward brother Albert Rémy, and a whirlwind love affair with admiring waitress Marie Dubois. Both a sly tribute to film noir and a moving rethinking of its key tropes, Truffaut’s second feature is pure nouvelle vague.
In French w/ English subtitles. 1960 | 81 min | 35mm
