The Soldier’s Tale
Aurora Theatre Company
Until December 18th
2081 Addison Street, Berkeley

Based on Igor Stravinsky’s 1918 work
Based on a concept by Muriel Maffre
Directed by Muriel Maffre and Tom Ross

An enchanting, one-of-a-kind collaboration between Artistic Director Tom Ross and former San Francisco Ballet principal dancer Muriel Maffre, this re-imagined production of Igor Stravinsky’s THE SOLDIER’S TALE will feature four musicians performing Stravinsky’s visionary score, actors L. Peter Callender and Joan Mankin, a life-size puppet, and Maffre dancing the role of the king’s daughter, as well as acting as master puppeteer. Written in 1918, and set to music by Igor Stravinsky (The Rite of Spring), THE SOLDIER’S TALE is based on a Russian folk tale about a soldier who makes a deal with the devil, trading his fiddle for a book that predicts the future.

“[In The Soldier’s Tale] Igor Stravinsky’s music is endlessly beguiling and the actors deliver their parts with captivating conviction…when [Muriel] Maffre’s Daughter [of the King] rises from her sick bed, tentatively stretches her limbs and takes flight in balletic wonder [the] story, dance and music become one…everything comes together, it’s a delight.
